The CUBIC project has successfully reached its third milestone with the first reception of biobased materials! This marks a crucial step in developing innovative, sustainable alternatives for complex products.

Advancing Biobased Material Development

To achieve this milestone, CUBIC partners have worked extensively on designing and optimizing three key biobased materials:

1. 3RCAN-Bioepoxy System

The development of the 3RCAN-bioepoxy system was led by SPECIFIC POLYMERS. This innovative resin system incorporates biobased epoxy resin building blocks (Bio-EPO) and dynamic hardeners (Bio-DyEPO & BioDyHard) to enhance biocarbon content while ensuring the system maintains its reprocessability, repairability, and recyclability (3R properties).

2. High-Tech Biobased Polyamides (BioPA)

NOVAMONT has been at the forefront of designing the novel biobased polyamides (bioPAs). Through rigorous screening of biobased monomers, the most promising ones were selected and validated for their potential applications.

3. Advanced Biobased Carbon Fibers

The development of biobased carbon fibers has been spearheaded by the University of Limerick (LIM), where two parallel production methods were used. The one was based on water-spun lignin salts and the other one on melt-spun lignin blends resulting in lower diameter fibers.

A Significant Step Toward Circular Innovation

With the first reception of these materials, CUBIC has successfully demonstrated its ability to scale up and validate biobased alternatives. This achievement marks the completion of Milestone 3 and lays the groundwork for the upcoming scale-up of production and performance evaluation of these novel materials.

Stay tuned for more updates on CUBIC’s journey towards a greener, more circular future!
